7 Ways to Stay Safe During WNY’s 100 Deadliest Days

You would not have seen it on your calendar, but Western New York is currently in the midst of its 100 Deadliest Days. This is not due to higher temperatures or increased time around the water. Rather, the time from Memorial Day to Labor Day is known as the 100 Deadliest Days for teen drivers.  We want to provide you with 7 ways to stay safe during WNY’s 100 deadliest days.

AAA found that from 2011 to 2020, more than 30% of fatal crashes involving teen drivers nationwide occurred between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Those crashes resulted in more than 7,100 deaths. Unfortunately, we are already seeing the effects of the 100 Deadliest Days after just a few weeks. Thankfully, there are a number of ways to reduce the danger you and your loved ones face during the 100 Deadliest Days.

100 Deadliest Days

First, everyone should be aware of the risk factors. Some of the riskiest habits that factor into teen driver crashes are:

    1. Teen Passengers – The risk of a teen driver crashing is multiplied when they have teen passengers in the vehicle.

    2. Distracted Driving – No surprise here, cell phones are the second biggest distraction after teen passengers.

    3. Speeding – Excessive speed is a leading factor in all crashes.

    4. Night Driving – Not only is visibility limited, but there are more fatigued and impaired drivers on the road at night.  While we cannot completely eliminate dangerous driving, there are plenty of actions we can take to reduce our risk on the road:

    5.  Set Rules and Limits for Teen Drivers – Parents are the first and best line of defense. Setting and enforcing rules and limits for your teen driver can go a long way towards creating safe driving habits.

    6. Drive Defensively – Eliminate as many distractions as possible to be alert and keep yourself safe from unsafe drivers.

    7. Use the Road Correctly – Make sure you always use the road correctly. Bicycles go with the flow of traffic. Pedestrians go against the flow of traffic.

If we all do our part, we can make this summer safer for everyone in Western New York.
